Found Treasure Journal - what is sea glass

What is Seaglass?

‘Sea glass’ is naturally tumbled glass that has been tipped into the sea and found as treasure. Glass from drinks and medicine bottles account for many of the pieces I find today. Because of the size, shape and texture of the pieces I use, these can date from 50 - 100 years old.

I have always enjoyed walking along the beach and finding Seaglass, these pieces gave me the idea to create luxury, one of a kind jewellery. Finding different shapes and imagining what I can make with that particular shape is a puzzle I enjoy solving. The organic shapes that the ocean floor has created are ones that you would find hard to replicate. Each piece has it’s own story, own curves and unique surface.

Some colours are more rare than others although each piece that I have collected over time has been part of a treasure hunt in it’s self. The tumbling waves, abrasive sand and pebbles create really interesting shapes that could’t be created by hand. Which is why I like to work around what I find, in order to create something new each time.

It is hard to pick favourites, as each colour has a unique depth to it. Plus, the fact that they look so different when set into Silver or Gold, in comparison to how they look when I find them. So each finished piece has it’s own charming mixture of rough and smooth, new and old.

The different shapes do make it much harder to measure and set, as no piece is the same. But it’s worth the time, every time. I really enjoy making gifts for people who are looking for a sea inspired piece, that resonates with the on a personal level. From a young age I would admire handmade style art with a kind of awe. Looking back I have always been interested in design, texture and unique gifts. So being able to make and explore what I am passionate about is an absolute dream.

Thank you for reading this journal post and for supporting me on my journey with Found Treasure.
