The Art of Gifting

After a tough year, it’s definitely acceptable to allow yourself to feel a little festive ahead of time. It’s also important now more than ever to support small businesses in the run up to Christmas day. When you buy from a small, independent maker, you’re directly supporting their dream, whilst also purchasing a unique, personal gift. The love and care that goes into handmade gifts practically radiates from the item itself, so when you give one of these one-of-a-kind items, you’ll be passing on that love, care and attention to the receiver too.

“It's always such a pleasure to make handmade gifts. I love knowing the story behind each of the pieces and who they are for, as it adds something extra special to the making side of things. I also enjoy writing a handwritten note to say thank you for supporting my small business and that I hope the piece reminds them of the ocean and it's magic. Because we all need a little reminder to feel the good sometimes.” - Naomi, Found Treasure.

Choose quality over quantity. You don’t need to shower your loved ones in gifts to show them you care, when a simple, personal present will fill their heart with far more joy. The sentiment behind something limited edition and handmade, created by a maker that pours their passion into whatever they design, is always sure to win. Found Treasure’s values slide into every aspect of the business. Not only is Naomi’s jewellery inspired by the sea, but she keeps the ocean and the natural environment in mind when it comes to the final stages too. Natural products deserve natural wrapping, and Naomi strives to protect the earth as much as possible by using recycled, reusable and compostable packaging.

“Wrapping the pieces by hand completes the making process. Using compostable kraft boxes and stationary aligns with my values as well as Found Treasures neutral, sandy colour scheme. I add a little touch of gold with the custom shell and sea shape stamps, then finish with jute string. I imagine that my customers appreciate the little details that go into the craft that I am dedicated to and the art involved in gifting.”

If one good thing came out of lockdown, it’s that so many people either discovered their hidden talents, or finally found time to pursue their passions. So many talented creatives popped up, producing an array of perfect presents, and in doing so launched independent businesses that deserve recognition. By choosing to support these small businesses, you are encouraging a new generation of makers, artisans and creatives. Another reason to buy from these independent creators is that you’ll have the freedom and opportunity to speak with the maker. Whether you have any questions about the piece, would like to discuss custom options, need advice or simply want to place the order in person, you’ll be speaking with the brand owner directly. Gifting with meaning and care has never been easier.

“I love meeting my customers and giving them their treasure in person. Designing and giving are the two of the best parts to my job. So If you are in Auckland let me know if you'd like to cut the shipping costs and pick up from me in person, or if I can do a local delivery for you!”

The art of gifting is long from being lost! Bring mindfulness to an otherwise seemingly overwhelming time. Christmas shopping doesn’t have to be stressful, especially when it comes to presents for the ones you love the most. The very act of giving can be just as exciting as receiving, if not a lot more therapeutic. From the moment you first lay eyes on that perfect gift, the experience begins. Speaking with the maker, collecting your unique and personal present, lovingly wrapping the item and patiently playing the waiting game before you can hand it over, followed by the sparkle that ignites in their eyes when you place the package in their hands. The saying, ‘it’s the thought that counts’ has never been more true.

“Jewellery is so personal, so precious and so sentimental. If you are a sea lover or modern mermaid, I hope that wearing my work reminds you of the calm and energy the ocean brings and that you can always return whenever you need.”

You’ll be able to find Naomi in person, surrounded by her treasures, at the Whangamata Weekend Market on Sunday 20th December, just before the summer solstice! Surrounded by other creatives, it’s the perfect place to pop down for some last minute Christmas shopping, gather as a community before the big day commences, try delicious street food and meet the makers.

“This year has created so much change for me and for Found Treasure. From my new year's resolution to publish my website to building stock for markets. It’s been an amazing transformation, I’ve stayed true to myself and to my brand and am so excited to see where this takes me next. Meeting customers and new friends though Found Treasure has been incredible, discussing the importance of creativity and the meaning behind jewellery has brought everything closer. Thank you to everyone who has supported me this year, without you I wouldn’t have a small business - a part of me that I have been wanting to unlock and explore for a long time.’
