Remember to stay in your magic

An era of change seems to have settled upon the creators and makers. Creatives everywhere are realising their passions can also turn a profit, and are pooling time and energy into making businesses out of their once-pastimes. Jewellers, potters, writers, photographers, illustrators, seamstresses… The rise of the small business and supporting small is ever-growing and it’s beautiful to see the unique, heartfelt pieces being produced. Choosing lifestyle over salaries and love over money is on the rise and we couldn’t be happier to see fellow makers staying int heir magic.

Do the things that make your soul sing. But what does it mean to stay in your magic? “It’s a reminder to me and hopefully others. Finding what feels a lot like you, staying in that feeling and believing in yourself is so important.” Founder Naomi always knew she was a creator, but once she discovered her passion for jewellery design she was determined to turn her craft into her livelihood. “Small businesses provide a new way of life for entrepreneurial thinkers, makers and designers. It’s a hard route to take but taking small steps in the right direction is always a good feeling. Having more small businesses allows room for individuality and I feel like people want to support local more than ever right now, as you receive a quality product from someone you trust and from a brand that aligns with your values.”

Following your heart is so important. Turning something you love into your job is an amazing way of staying motivated, passionate and grateful. If you wake up dreading going to work, change it up! Wellbeing should be at the forefront of your mind, so listen to what excites you and set it free. It’s also necessary to set yourself small, achievable goals and always celebrate your successes, big and small. Starting your own business is scary, but you can do it!

There is an incredible network of small-scale makers out there. The interconnectedness and support amongst them is amazing. Tap into your local circuit of small business owners and fellow freelancers, they are likely to have come up against the same hurdles as you, and most will be more than willing to support and guide you through your journey. Plus, collaborating and co-working with other creatives is invaluable when it comes to dreaming up new ideas and finding inspiration.

Running a small business means wearing multiple hats. If you’re starting little, you’ll probably find yourself as maker, marketer, accountant and sales, just to name the main titles! Maybe you can bring elements from past jobs into your new business, or you have friends who can help you learn the ropes. Plus, there are so many free resources online. Consider working with other freelancers if you’re outsourcing for photography, copywriting or web design, they’ll be able to give you pointers from their own experience of setting up their brand too. Try not to worry about going full-on-full-time. If you work a job on the side, you don’t need to consider your passion project as a ‘side hustle’, rather your day job can be your side hustle and your small business is your full time hustle! Quitting your job, going part time or even just spending your evenings and weekends building your little business is a massive achievement and beautifully brave. Thinking about starting your own brand? Found Treasure’s Naomi says go for it; “These things take time and what you get down on paper now might not be exactly what you end up doing or producing but the details, people and opportunity comes with time. Believe in yourself and be true to you.”

‘Reach out to people whose work inspires you even if it’s not connected to your style. Speak to friends about your ideas and see connections unfolding, ready to take you to your next step. Keep voting for you. You’ve got this. Stay in your magic.’
