How to Find the Right Ring Size

Finding the right ring size can feel like one of the trickiest parts of choosing a ring, especially if you’re planning a surprise. It’s something I’m asked about often and the good news is that there are several reliable ways to approach it.

Ring sizing doesn’t have to be perfect the first time but with a little guidance it’s often easy to get very close. Below are a few simple ways to find the right size, whether you’re planning ahead or keeping things a surprise.

If You’re Planning a Surprise

If you don’t have a way to measure an existing ring, it’s absolutely fine to make an informed estimate. Over time, certain sizes tend to come up more frequently.

As a general guide:

  • Size J often suits smaller hands

  • Size L is a very common ring finger size

  • Size M can work well for slightly larger hands

Hands, fingers and lifestyles all vary, so this is simply a starting point, not a rule. If the ring needs adjusting later, it can easily be resized once it’s been worn and tried properly.

Resizing Later On

If the ring isn’t quite right once it’s worn, resizing is straightforward.

I offer resizing at £40 plus postage or you’re very welcome to have the ring resized by a trusted local jeweller if that’s more convenient for you.

It’s far more important that the moment feels right than the size being exact on the day.

A Little Detective Work

If you’re able to measure a ring they already wear, this can be one of the most accurate methods.

You can use the JW Ring Sizer app, which allows you to place a ring on your phone screen and adjust a sliding scale to match the inside edge of the ring. From there, I can help convert that measurement into the correct UK ring size.

For best results:

  • Use a ring worn on the ring finger, or the middle finger if needed

  • Choose a ring with a medium to fine band, rather than a very chunky style (around 5mm or more), as thicker bands can distort sizing

If you’re unsure, you can always send me the details and I’ll help you calculate the closest size.

Asking for Help

Some people choose to quietly ask a close friend or family member, someone who might already know their ring size or who can help without raising suspicion. I understand how personal and private this time can be, so this option is always there if it feels comfortable for you.

Using a Ring Sizer

If timing allows, I also offer a ring sizer that can be posted directly to your door.

For £10, you’ll receive a reusable sizing tool that lets you try different sizes at home. Once you return the sizer in the post, you’ll receive a £10 code to use against your ring purchase, making it essentially complimentary. You can find the ring sizer here.

A Final Reassurance

Ring sizing doesn’t need to be a source of stress. There’s flexibility built into the process and I’m always happy to help you make the best decision with the information you have.

If you’re unsure at any stage, just reach out, we’ll work it out together.
